Silistra

Silistra region take place in the north-eastern part of the map of Bulgaria, on the bank of the Danube river. It is bounded by 4 other regions - Rousse, Razgrad, Dobrich and Shumen. It has borders on Romania by land and by the Danube River. The territory of the region includes parts of the hilly Danubian Plain, Dobrudza and Ludogorie lowlands. The Danube River is a natural waterway connecting Silistra with Central and Eastern Europe. The other rivers, wich flow through the territory are small and they often run dry in summer. The landscape is agricultural; grain and technical crops are generally grown. Conditions related to natural climate and soil in the region are extremely conductive to developing modern farming.
Natural and historical realities of the region enable the development of rural, ecological, cultural, cognitive and hunting tourism. Lake Srebarna is the most attractive natural site in the region, part of the Srebarna Biosphere Reserve, included in the UNESCO List of World Cultural Heritage. Several islands have been formed in the Danube, some of which are suitable for tourist and recreational purposes. The Kazakuz natural game preserve provides opportunities for hunting and ecotourism.
There are also archeological artifacts through out the region - remnants of fortresses, Thracian mounds, the unique Silistra sepulcher. Due to the strategic location of the region, fortresses have been build there until 19th century. The economic and cultural development of the region has been mostly influenced by the Romanian occupation for the period 1913-1940. There are many historical landmarks which followed the path of the long year’s development of Bulgaria.
